Memorial Day Tribute
In memory of Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, of Patchogue, NY, who was killed in Afghanistan on June 28th, 2005, Hawthorne Brook will once again be doing the Mini-Murph on Friday, May 17th during specials.
The “Murph” workout was one of Lt. Murphy’s favorite workouts and it is done in gyms throughout the country on Memorial Day in honor of his service and sacrifice. The original “Murph” was Lt. Murphy’s favorite workout: run 1 mile, 100 pull-ups, 200 push ups, 300 squats, run 1 mile with 20-30 lbs of body armor.
Our Mini-Murph is a smaller version of the original. On that day, students will come to the gym during their specials period. The gym will be decorated with the help of the student council.
Mr. Day's chorus will start the day off with the national anthem.
Mrs. LaPointe's wind ensemble will be playing the song "Armed Forces on Parade"
Any past or present service men and women are welcome to come to join us!
At the end of the day, students will write letters to service men and women serving overseas.
We also will be fundraising for Operation Enduring Warriors during the week leading up to the Murph with a Penny Wars competition.

Drug Awareness Presentation
On May 29th, students in grades 7 and 8 from Nissitissit and Hawthorne Brook will be attending the presentation, "No First Time." The presentation will be in the NMS Auditorium at 9:30 a.m. Hawthorne Brook students will be bussed to and from Nissitissit.
"No First Time" is a 45-minute presentation by the Evan Foundation designed to educate young people on the dangers of experimenting with drugs and engaging in risky behavior.
More information can be found here: http://evangfoundation.org/.
Research shows that adolescents experiment with drugs as young as 13 years old, which can have devastating consequences as brains are not fully developed until their late 20s. The effect is especially detrimental in opioid addiction. This presentation aims to educate youth in making the right decisions, as there is “ No First Time”
Thank you to NM Cares for sponsoring this presentation.
If you do not want your child to attend this presentation, please sign and return the opt-out form to your child’s homeroom teacher.
The form is here and a copy will be sent home with students, closer to the date.
Contact Sandi Shepherd-Gay with any questions at 978-597-6914.

2019 HB Annual Rowing Competition
Ms. Delaney, Mr. Caravella, and Mr. Billingham, along with Community Rowing Inc. introduced Hawthorne Brook students to rowing by providing Concept 2 rowing machines at each middle school. We will celebrate all of our hard training by having a friendly competition with Nissitissit at NMS Thursday, May 30th. CRI is hosting a YETI (Youth Erg Trials International) for our students at Nissitissit on May 30, 2019.   After the race, students from both schools will enjoy a pizza lunch together.

HB CrossFit Kids Program
The HB CrossFit Kids program is offered on Mondays and Wednesdays. Classes begin promptly at 7:30AM and will run until the start of the school day (7:55AM).

What is CrossFit Kids?
CrossFit Kids combines gymnastics, body-weight calisthenics, and weightlifting elements to develop capacity across 10 General Physical Skills, with additional focus on elements that encourage bone density and balance, and coordination development. Children have a great opportunity to maximize their physical skills when exposed to this stimulus during years of peak development, and the elements are combined to keep children engaged and entertained while teaching them proper movement mechanics and creating a broad athletic foundation. For CrossFit Kids, it is imperative to pair fitness and fun, thus creating a lifelong love of health and fitness for our children.
If your child is interested in joining us please email Heidi Delaney  hdelaney@nmrsd.org with your child’s name and grade. Feel free to email me with any questions as well.
